Luck Beat Obeah
A Bespoke Memoir
Fraught with obstacles, such as a debilitating health issue that struck our Client during the making of this book, this story, in a sense, was not fully “caught” in time.
But then again, that had always been the pervading feeling here: there was always more, we felt, and capturing a person as multi-faceted and extraordinary as she is was never going to be straightforward.
And so aside from the usual interviews with family, friends, and colleagues, this project also saw us carry out extensive research to learn about her family history and the major historical events that impacted her life. Among other places, our search led us to the British Library and Kew’s National Archives.
Luck Beat Obeah compiles the stories she was ready to share in the year that we got to know her. The title reflects the impression she has of her life: rather than purposeful direction, she succeeded (against the odds), by virtue of luck. While we cannot argue that luck plays a key role in anyone’s success, the year we spent with her taught us about her spirit and strength of character. In fact, At Plantain our memoirs are always self-commissioned by men, but with this book, she sets the precedent as the first woman ever to commission a memoir for herself.
We are honoured that she did.
In terms of the design process, this book was printed on Sapphire Verona fine linen, a natural textured linen surface, and a Red foil was used. The interior made use of the luxurious Bright White Uncoated Vellum paper (120 GSM).
